A DAY AT
CROSSROADS – A VISIT TO |

In may 2003, just before the final episode of Crossroads Mk III
aired I was lucky enough to visit the exterior set at Carlton Studios in The following photographs are a wonderful record of my day which
I am pleased to share with visitors to this site. My thanks go to the staff at the (now closed) studios for their
generosity and time – especially John who was never anything other than
friendly, approachable and above all proud of the series. |

The image
above shows the hotel exterior pretty much as it appeared on screen – except
for the large golden planters which had been removed at the end of filming. As
you can see the neon sign, red carpet and heart shaped fountain are still in
place – although many of these items were later sold off. The second
image really shows the “magic of television” – the curved walls are nothing
more than wooden flats held up with scaffolding poles. Behind them are the
remains of the 2001 series trellis-work |

In all the
2001 publicity shots, Jake, Tracey, Kate and Patrick enjoy a tea in the
reception lounge – although the photographs were taken on the studio set, the
area was recreated as part of the exterior set. The wooden louvre blinds remain although the area seems to be used
for storage. We believe
that scenes in which Tracey gave Sarah Jane a massage in the early episodes
of the series were filmed here |

The hotel
corridor scenes were filmed here – in a set cleverly constructed within an
existing studio corridor. The doors could only open a few inches before
hitting the walls behind. Only the carpet remained – the doors had all been
sold off before my visit. You can see
photographs of the corridor once the set had been deconstructed HERE along with other
exterior shots. |

Lastly, a
picture of me standing outside the hotel and a photograph taken inside the
entrance porch. Incidentally when
I had the photos taken the doors opened automatically – no men pulling
strings here – fully functioning doors. It was very odd walking into the
hotel. The table on
the right now lives in my house! |

|
Again, I would
like to thank the management and staff at Carlton Studios for allowing me to
walk around the studio complex. I had a great day! You can see a
brief video clip of my day HERE (wmv
format) |
