*The Missing Episode 1729

I am extremely grateful to Mike Garrett at the Crossroads Appreciation Society for helping me to research this information…

As you will see from the numbering below, there is no official “Episode 1729” – episodes go straight from 1728 to 1730.

Episode 1729 WAS story-lined and WAS scripted – it just wasn’t recorded! The script for Episode 1729 shows that it was scheduled for 28-06-72

Script for Episode 1729 shows

Scheduled TX Date: 28-06-72

For some reason, the block of 4 episodes “Week 398” – (Episodes 1728-1731) was scheduled to be recorded out of order:

Episode 1 (1728) on Wednesday 14th June 1972 (am)

Episode 3 (1730) on Wednesday 14th June 1972 (pm)

Episode 2 (1729) on Thursday 15th June 1972 (am)

Episode 4 (1731) on Thursday 15th June 1972 (pm)

This is not unheard of in terms of television production and there are numerous reasons why that could have been the case, but it meant that the “production machine” needed to run smoothly during the recording process as the episodes recorded 9th-15th June were due to be transmitted 27th-30th June – just two weeks later.

It is worth noting that although Jane Rossington’s wedding was on Friday 16th June, she was not in any of the episodes this week.

Unfortunately, on Wednesday 14th June there was a short strike by camera crew and technicians. They were protesting about office accommodation at ATV Centre. The production schedule above suggests that this is likely to have been during the recording time for Episode 1730.

Birmingham Post

15-06-72

The “Birmingham Post” reported on the strike, with the news that the technicians returned to work in time for Crossroads to go on air – what it doesn’t say, but is likely to have happened, is that a whole episode was lost in the process!

Production Paperwork simply states: “Episode 1729 Not Recorded” – I don’t know why Episode 1729 was missed, rather than Episode 1730 – perhaps the events of 1730 were deemed to be more significant and that is why it was recorded instead.

So why not re-number the episodes? Well that’s quite easy really -  Episode 1730 and 1731 HAD been recorded, and the scripts for the next week or two had already gone out with the existing numbers on. It clearly made sense to “skip” episode 1729.

Obviously there was some “missing” material that was necessary for the ongoing storylines, and it appears that a few scenes involving a few of the actors (and Horatio the dog) were recorded as ‘part of’ Episode 1730.

So there you have it – the reason why Episode 1729 was “missing” right from 1972!
